Industrial service for passenger boarding bridges 3-fold all-round protection

They have names like Artania, Vasco da Gama or Iona. They only stay in Bremerhaven for a short time. From here, the journey usually continues northwards to Norway, Iceland or even Great Britain. The cruise ships that dock here at the Columbus Cruise Centre Bremerhaven carry up to 5,000 passengers. Three new passenger boarding bridges were recently put into operation at the pier to ensure that passengers can get on and off the floating giants safely and quickly. The so-called Seaport Passenger Boarding Bridges (SPBBs) were supplied by ADELTE. And the Spanish company is relying on Blumenbecker to maintain the passenger boarding bridges.

Efficient and modern

Almost 57 metres. That's how long a passenger has to walk when boarding a cruise ship at Columbuskaje in Bremerhaven. Directly from the terminal building, you walk through two glazed tunnel sections. At the end of the light-flooded path, the docking ramp takes you directly onto the ship - without stairs, without climbs - safely and quickly. The three SPBBs are

the longest of their kind and combine efficiency in passenger handling with state-of-the-art technology. The movements of the ship can be equalised at any tide. The bridges run on two rails and also on rubber wheels on the water side. This allows them to be moved lengthways along the quay in order to dock with the ship and terminal building as required.

»It is important for us to find a local partner who offers a good service and can be on site quickly in the event of a fault.«

Maintenance and service

ADELTE, supplier of passenger boarding bridges, has its headquarters in Barcelona and is an engineering company with more than 60 years of experience. The international company specialises in the development and manufacture of high-quality products and services for airports, cruise and ferry terminals. ADELTE gangways and passenger boarding bridges are used all over the world. In Germany, there are three SPBBs each in Kiel, Hamburg and now also in Bremerhaven.

Blumenbecker's service technicians are deployed to ensure that passengers in Bremerhaven can always board and disembark the cruise ships safely, comfortably and quickly. The three passenger boarding bridges are serviced monthly, quarterly and every six months. Two service technicians need around two working days for the half-yearly inspection. ‘The maintenance agenda includes the electrical control system, the trolleys and PLC control system as well as the mechanical elements. We also check the general condition,’ explains Dirk Harbers, Service Manager at Blumenbecker IndustrieService GmbH in Bremen.

Local and experienced

Blumenbecker also provides an on-call emergency service for the customer. If a bridge does not work according to plan, Blumenbecker's service technicians are called out. ‘We have the expertise and are based on site,’ says Harbers, summarising the customer benefits in a few words. The customer has a similar view. Enric Abadal Palacios is Project Manager at ADELTE. He took care of the project in Bremerhaven from production to commissioning and handover to the customer. ‘It's important for us to find a local partner who offers a good service and can be on site quickly in the event of a fault. And we found that in Blumenbecker.’

ADELTE contacted various companies for the tender. ‘Blumenbecker were the most experienced in industrial services. We have had one breakdown so far and they were able to resolve the problem quickly,’ adds Abadal Palacios. The partnership between ADELTE and Blumenbecker is still young, but ‘it looks very good and is going well,’ he attests.

Safe and reliable

The three new SPBBs at the Columbus quay: on the almost 57 metres that passengers travel when ‘boarding for their holiday’, they may be thinking about taking a break from everyday life, gourmet meals or sightseeing. But certainly not about whether the electrical controls are operational, and the mechanical elements are safe and reliable. And they don't have to. The Blumenbecker service technicians will take care of that - for sure!
