Experience Tianjin, the coastal city of China Drum tower and breakfast
A good start to the day begins with a delicious breakfast. This wisdom applies everywhere. In Tianjin, the largest coastal city in northern China, you can experience a special morning food culture: 煎饼果子 (jianbing guozi) is typical of the local street food. It is a thin, crispy pancake filled with eggs, vegetables and sometimes meat. Most people have the speciality wrapped up and enjoy it on the go.
If you set out to explore Tianjin, you need to take your time. There is so much to discover. The "Pearl of the Bohai Region" is a vibrant city just 120 kilometres south of Beijing. The harbour city is a hub for trade and industry, making it a melting pot of different cultures and influences. This diverse background is reflected in the architecture - from skyscrapers that characterise the skyline to traditional Chinese temples from the Qing dynasty.
Tianjin Eye and river romance
The diverse architecture also includes an attraction that is truly unmissable. Since its completion in 2008, the Tianjin Eye has been the city's new landmark. 120 metres high and futuristically illuminated in neon at night, it rises above the Yongle Bridge and the Hai He River below. It is also the only Ferris wheel that stands on a bridge. The Ferris wheel takes 30 minutes to complete one circuit. This is plenty of time to see up to 40 kilometres away on a clear day and be enchanted by the contrasting cityscape.
If you prefer to stay close to the ground, you can discover the city on a boat trip on the Hai He or take a stroll along the riverside promenade - past fountains, sculptures and green landscapes that invite you to linger and picnic.
Guwenhua Jie and Qing-Dynastie
When you enter Guwenhua Jie - the old cultural street - you are immersed a little further into the past with every step you take. No wonder it is one of Tianjin's most popular tourist attractions, as it combines a lively shopping street and cultural stronghold of the Qing dynasty in one. The heart of the harbour district was renovated and refurbished in 1986. The buildings with their green walls and red columns are typical of the Qing dynasty. And if you take a closer look at the doors and windows, you will see drawings of animals, flowers or personalities from that time. The past comes alive at the annual Huanghui Festival, with traditional lion dances and parades.
Drum tower
The restored drum tower with its tiled roofs and red beams is further evidence of Tianjin's historical greatness. The city was once guarded by four city gates and towers. The three-storey structure, whose lower level is a square brick platform, is wider at the base and narrowing towards the top. The four arched gateways lead to the four main streets of the city: North, East, South and West Market Street.
Two floors rise above this platform, the first of which is dedicated to the worship of deities such as Guan Yu and Yue Fei. A 300 Jin iron bell hangs on the second floor.
Education and transport
If you don't want to explore Tianjin on foot, you can either use public transport or one of the many taxis. Connected to the public transport system - including a high-speed train - the city offers fast connections to other metropolises, whether by train, bus or ferry. The metropolis also has an international airport. The city is also popular with students and has several universities. There are over 33,000 students at Tianjin University alone.
Tianjin - an important harbour city with historic districts, rich in culture and modern.
INSIDERTIPP "Crosstalk"
Tianjin is also famous for its traditional art forms. Crosstalk, a form of comic dialogue, is a quintessential aspect of Tianjin's cultural identity. Originating in Beijing, it flourished in Tianjin, making the city a pivotal figure in the history of this art form. The teahouses are the stages where crosstalk artists showcase their talents, delivering jokes, witty repartees, and singing routines that leave the audience in stitches. These teahouses are not just places to enjoy a cup of tea. they are temples of traditional art, where the enchanting sounds of crosstalk echo through the air.
